If you’ve followed me and my work for any amount of time, you know I’m constantly refining my overlanding setup. I spend A LOT of time driving across the country to chase new fine art photos and to teach workshops, so my phone is my navigation system, B Roll camera, music hub, and backup comms device. So the mount and charging setup can’t be an afterthought!
Tackform recently sent over their TRAXX™ Slim Track dash brackets for the 2024+ Jeep Wrangler JL and Gladiator JT, along with their new Qi2/MagSafe charger with active cooling. After installing and running them for a few weeks, here’s my thoughts and review on the setup!
The first thing you notice when you pull this out of the box is that it’s not plastic. The bracket is CNC-machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and finished with a hardcoat anodizing that looks right at home in the Jeep interior and feels like it's going to last forever.
No flex. No weird edges. No cheap coating. Just solid metal and a very nice finish. Enough weight to feel premium which I like.

Not yet available on Amazon, however their awesome and similar Assault Bracket is.
Jeep did us a favor with the 2024+ models by integrating AMPS mounting holes directly into the dashboard tray area. Tackform designed the Slim Track bracket to take full advantage of that. They also have AMP specific brackets which I've been running for the past year, but the new track system allows you more flexibility on placement of your bracket/device.
Installation is as simple as it can get:
1: Remove the rubber dash tray.
2: Remove the four factory screws.
3: Drop the Slim Track bracket into place.
4: Reinstall the screws.
5: Slide ball mount into the track and tighten
That’s it! No drilling into your dash. No permanent modification. If you ever want to return it to stock, it takes minutes. Not that I ever will - I tossed the OEM rubber covers.

This is where it really shines.
Instead of a grid-style system that requires nuts and bolts every time you want to reposition something, the Slim Track uses a machined rail across the top. Mounting bases slide in and lock down wherever you want them. The top of the ball uses an allen, so you can keep that in your console if you ever need to adjust.
Need to move your phone slightly left? Loosen, slide, tighten.
Want to add a second device like a tablet, radio mic, or action camera? Just slide another base into the track.
It’s clean, modular, and very useful. I've found on my previous phone mount that the AMPS base is a bit too close to my steering wheel for my huge iPhone 17 Pro Max, and I have to raise it a bit higher than I'd like at times.

Tackform offers both driver-side and passenger-side versions, and you can run one or both.
I started with the passenger side since I already had Tackform's AMP base bracket on the driver side, and my passengers watch a lot of videos on long trips. But even with the new base, you can still bolt the AMP base holder on top of it, so I went ahead and did that on the driver side. I think I will order the new ball and MagSafe mount for that side next - I have rarely used any MagSafe accessories as I'm nervous about them not holding well, but I'm really enjoying this setup.
I've never been a fan of wireless charging. I use my phone A LOT while traveling. When it's plugged in you always have power, CarPlay, etc. I use my Starlink for wifi and wireless CarPlay won't work when connected to another wifi network. Wireless CarPlay uses Wi-Fi as its transport layer so even though setup starts over Bluetooth, the actual CarPlay session switches to a dedicated Wi-Fi connection between your iPhone and the vehicle’s head unit.
So when wireless CarPlay connects, my phone automatically disconnects from Starlink Wi-Fi and joins the vehicle’s CarPlay Wi-Fi network. So that's a lot of words to explain I always use a wired connection. But I have found the wireless charging to be nice, and my passengers will love it!
Qi2 is the newest evolution of the Qi wireless charging standard. It adds magnetic alignment for better efficiency and higher power delivery. The 25W version delivers significantly more power than older 15W pads and can bring a phone from low battery to 50% in roughly 30 minutes under ideal conditions. So it's a high quality and modern charger - not an old piece of tech that won't keep up

High-speed charging and especially charging wirelessly creates heat. Heat is the enemy of battery longevity and performance, and we all fear the dreaded "phone is too hot" screen.
This unit has a thermoelectric cooling system directly into the charger. It actively pulls heat away from the back of the phone instead of just letting it bake in place.
My phone never got excessively warm, even during long drives with maps and the screen running continuously. You can always use the button on the side to enable or disable the cooling and/or charging features.

The charger mounts using Tackform’s 20mm CNC-machined aluminum ball system.
If you’ve used plastic ball mounts before, you know they can can slip or sag over time. This one is is tight and makes the whole system very adjustable. And it holds position even on rough terrain, which is obviously important for someone like me!
Snap the phone on magnetically, adjust your viewing angle, lock it down, and you’re done.

Because Qi2 is backward-compatible with MagSafe and standard Qi devices, it works with:
Magnetic alignment ensures the charging coil stays centered, which improves both speed and efficiency.
They also sent over a MOLLE-compatible pouch and it was good timing. I leave at the end of March to be out West shooting and teaching for several months and I've been looking for another little pouch for charging cords.
This has a large zippered compartment and a Velcro front pocket. I mounted mine to the MOLLE panel on my SmartCap kitchen setup and now use it for:
If you run seat-back MOLLE panels or drawer systems, this is a clean way to organize small items!

This one is just fun and while I have no idea where I'm going to use it, it's a nice bottle and who knows when the magsafe may come in handy.
It’s a double-wall vacuum-insulated stainless steel bottle that keeps drinks cold up to 24 hours or hot up to 12. Wide mouth for ice. Straw lid for easy sipping.
But the real trick is the magnetic lid. If your phone has MagSafe compatibility, you can snap it to the lid and use the bottle as a hands-free stand. I could see it being a good way to setup a phone timelapse if the tripods are all used up!

After a few weeks of use, I can confidently say this is one of the cleanest dash setups I’ve had to date. I hate the window suction cups that always fall in the summer heat, and vent clips seem like a bad idea with big heavy phones.
The Slim Track bracket looks great and doesn’t compromise the interior. The modular track system makes adding or repositioning devices easy. The Qi2 charger delivers fast wireless charging without cooking your phone. And the metal 20mm ball system feels built to last.
It’s not just another Amazon suction cup mount, this is a properly engineered mounting solution with time and thought put into the design.
