About this Image

Big Bend Region, Texas

We had been teaching astrophotography late into the night, walking through exposures and tracking techniques under a sky that felt endless. I drove out before sunrise to scout for the next evening’s session. I planned on sleeping afterward but the clouds were starting to give promise of an amazing sunrise.

High-altitude texture started forming before dawn. Thin at first, then layered. By the time the eastern horizon began to glow, the ceiling above the Chisos was already charged with light waiting to happen.

When the sun finally cleared the horizon, still obscured by the Chisos, the entire sky lit up at once. The Chisos Mountains fell into silhouette while the clouds above them turned molten. The basin below stayed muted, soft browns and blues holding steady while the sky carried all the intensity.

I stayed where I was and let it unfold. No rushing. No repositioning. Just one frame, one exposure, and a mountain range that has stood through millions of years of volcanic upheaval and erosion, now briefly framed by a sky that looked like it was burning.

Sometimes staying up is the right decision! I made several wrong decisions as I often do when the sky amazes me - I was so focused on photos that I didn't run a timelapse, or even take any cell phone video at the peak. I have a few clips, but I did get some images I love such as this one.

Context and Landscape

The Chisos Mountains rise from the heart of Big Bend National Park as a volcanic mountain range isolated by desert lowlands. Often described as a “sky island,” the range supports plant and animal life that differs dramatically from the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert.

Formed roughly 30 to 40 million years ago during intense volcanic activity, the Chisos are composed primarily of igneous rock shaped by uplift and erosion. Peaks like Emory Peak and Casa Grande dominate the skyline, visible from wide stretches of the basin. Their silhouette is unmistakable from almost any direction.

The surrounding desert basin sits thousands of feet lower in elevation. Creosote, ocotillo, sotol, and lechuguilla cover the flats, adapted to heat, wind, and long dry seasons. Weather systems moving through this region can create dramatic sunrise conditions, especially when upper-level moisture spreads thin cloud layers across the sky.

When those clouds catch first light, the entire range becomes a dark cutout against a sky that shifts rapidly through gold, amber, and deep red. The mountains remain unchanged. The light transforms everything around them.

Additional Details About The Print

Acrylic Brilliance

Acrylic brings depth, clarity, and presence that traditional prints simply cannot. Light moves through the image, giving the photograph a dimensional quality that feels immersive rather than flat. The result is a piece that holds attention across a room and feels as bold as the landscape it came from.

Limited Edition 25

Limited Edition works are produced in an edition of 25 total prints, regardless of size. Once all 25 are sold, the edition is permanently closed and never reproduced as a single print again. Every piece is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and a personal narrative that captures the story behind the image, from the journey to the moment it was created.

All prints are made to order and typically require 7-14 business days of production. Once complete, your artwork is carefully packaged and shipped with full insurance and tracking. Mounting and Displaying your Art

Each piece arrives ready to hang with a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket to float the artwork approximately one inch off the wall, giving a refined gallery presentation. For small prints where a cleat is impractical, alternate hardware (screw or wire hanger) may be used on request. Because wall materials vary, we do not supply wall anchors and strongly recommend professional installation, especially for large or high‑value pieces. Image as example only, exact hardware can vary slightly

  • LIFETIME RUNS

    Limited Editions

    of 25 Prints

Every photograph released as a limited edition is capped at twenty‑five total prints across all sizes and finishes. Once all twenty‑five are placed, the edition closes permanently and is never produced again. Your piece will be accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity documenting the edition number (for example, 3/25), the title, and a personal narrative about how the photograph was captured and created. A serialised holographic sticker links the certificate to the artwork, ensuring provenance and authenticity for resale or appraisal.

  • MATERIALS & PRINTING

    Acrylic

    Face-Mount Process

Each limited edition print is produced using a gallery‑grade acrylic face‑mounting process. The image is printed on high‑resolution metallic photo paper with archival inks, then permanently bonded to UV‑resistant acrylic using an optically clear adhesive. This technique allows light to pass through the acrylic and reflect off the metallic print, creating depth, vibrant color, and a dramatic presence. Cast acrylic is used to prevent yellowing over time, and the edges are polished for a refined finish.

  • MOUNTING & DISPLAY

    Ready to

    Present

Each piece arrives ready to hang using a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back of the artwork. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket, causing the print to float roughly one inch off the wall for a clean, modern presentation. Due to the weight and value of these pieces, professional installation is strongly recommended.
