About this Image

Bisti–De-Na-Zin Badlands, New Mexico

This photograph was made after the sun sat in the Bisti–De-Na-Zin Badlands, after the last color had faded from the horizon. I stayed in this spot intentionally, wanting to see how the same forms would feel once daylight fully released its grip on the landscape.

What unfolded overhead was unlike anything I had personally witnessed before. The sky filled with intense airglow, rippling and luminous, almost aurora-like in its presence. It shifted the balance of the scene completely. The stone formations didn’t disappear into darkness, they became quiet observers beneath a sky that suddenly felt alive.

That experience changed something for me. I realized how often my night work had revolved around the Milky Way, how familiar and repeatable that process had become. This night made it clear that nightscapes don’t need the Milky Way to be powerful. Sometimes the atmosphere itself carries the weight. Sometimes the sky asks to be something else entirely.

Context and Landscape

The Bisti–De-Na-Zin Badlands are shaped by ancient seabeds, erosion, and time measured in millions of years. During the day, the landscape feels sculptural and exposed. At night, it becomes restrained and minimal, with form and texture revealed only where light allows.

Airglow is a natural atmospheric phenomenon caused by chemical reactions high in the Earth’s atmosphere. In extremely dark locations like this, it can become visible as soft bands or washes of color across the sky. On rare nights, it intensifies enough to rival more familiar celestial features, subtly illuminating the land below.

This is a place where night does not simply fall. It arrives slowly, then reshapes everything.

Creation Notes

The foreground was captured using a simple focus stack to maintain clarity in the rock formations while preserving the natural falloff into darkness.

Printing & Shipping

All prints are made to order and typically require 7-14 business days of production. Once complete, your artwork is carefully packaged and shipped with full insurance and tracking. We ship worldwide; domestic orders within the contiguous United States usually arrive within 1–5 business days. International deliveries are subject to local duties and taxes, which are the responsibility of the buyer. Large pieces may ship via freight and require additional handling time.

Mounting and Displaying your Art

Each piece arrives ready to hang with a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket to float the artwork approximately one inch off the wall, giving a refined gallery presentation. For small prints where a cleat is impractical, alternate hardware (screw or wire hanger) may be used on request. Because wall materials vary, we do not supply wall anchors and strongly recommend professional installation, especially for large or high‑value pieces.     Every photograph released as a limited edition is capped at twenty‑five total prints across all sizes and finishes. Once all twenty‑five are placed, the edition closes permanently and is never produced again. Your piece will be accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity documenting the edition number (for example, 3/25), the title, and a personal narrative about how the photograph was captured and created. A serialised holographic sticker links the certificate to the artwork, ensuring provenance and authenticity for resale or appraisal.

    Face-Mount Process

    Each limited edition print is produced using a gallery‑grade acrylic face‑mounting process. The image is printed on high‑resolution metallic photo paper with archival inks, then permanently bonded to UV‑resistant acrylic using an optically clear adhesive. This technique allows light to pass through the acrylic and reflect off the metallic print, creating depth, vibrant color, and a dramatic presence. Cast acrylic is used to prevent yellowing over time, and the edges are polished for a refined finish.
