About this Image

Great Sand Dunes, Colorado

This photograph came from a brief, unplanned stop while traveling back toward Texas. I had never seen the Great Sand Dunes in person, and curiosity pulled me in. It was the middle of winter, brutally cold, and the kind of weather that usually convinces you to keep driving. I stayed anyway.

As a storm rolled across the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the sky darkened fast. I didn’t expect to make a photograph. Sunset was closing in, visibility was changing by the minute, and the light felt like it was slipping away. Then a narrow window opened. The storm broke just enough to let light cut across the dunes while the mountains held onto snow and shadow.

From miles away, using a 600mm lens, the scene resolved into layers. Light and dark. Sand and snow. Storm and calm. Nothing here was constructed or enhanced. The pattern you see existed exactly like this for a moment, then disappeared just as quickly.

This is one of the simplest images I’ve made, and one of my favorites. It’s proof that power doesn’t always come from complexity. Sometimes it comes from being ready when a place decides to show you something briefly and without warning.

As a footnote to the experience, this was also one of the coldest nights I’ve ever spent in my rooftop tent. Temperatures dropped well below zero. Even with a large power bank and an electric blanket, the cold was relentless. That discomfort is part of the memory this image carries.

Context and Landscape

The Great Sand Dunes rise along the eastern edge of southern Colorado, pressed directly against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. These dunes are the tallest in North America, formed over thousands of years as winds trapped sand between mountain ranges and recycled it back onto the valley floor.

What makes this landscape unusual is the proximity of extremes. Vast, shifting dunes sit directly below steep alpine peaks that hold snow well into spring. Seasonal storms frequently sweep across the mountains, creating dramatic contrasts between light, shadow, and terrain.

In winter, the dunes are quieter and more austere. The sand hardens in the cold, the wind sculpts sharper lines, and the absence of crowds makes the place feel stripped down to its essentials. It’s a landscape built on repetition and scale, where small changes in light can completely redefine the scene.

Creation Notes

This image was captured from a distant vantage point using a long focal length to compress the layers of dunes and mountains. No focus stacking, compositing, or artificial lighting was used.

Post-processing was minimal and restrained, limited to exposure balance, contrast refinement, and color correction. The alternating bands of light and shadow across the dunes were entirely natural, created by the low sun breaking through a passing storm.

Additional Details About The Print

Acrylic Brilliance

Acrylic brings depth, clarity, and presence that traditional prints simply cannot. Light moves through the image, giving the photograph a dimensional quality that feels immersive rather than flat. The result is a piece that holds attention across a room and feels as bold as the landscape it came from.

Mounting and Displaying your Art

Each piece arrives ready to hang with a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket to float the artwork approximately one inch off the wall, giving a refined gallery presentation. For small prints where a cleat is impractical, alternate hardware (screw or wire hanger) may be used on request. Because wall materials vary, we do not supply wall anchors and strongly recommend professional installation, especially for large or high‑value pieces. Image as example only, exact hardware can vary slightly

  • LIFETIME RUNS

    Limited Editions

    of 25 Prints

Every photograph released as a limited edition is capped at twenty‑five total prints across all sizes and finishes. Once all twenty‑five are placed, the edition closes permanently and is never produced again. Your piece will be accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity documenting the edition number (for example, 3/25), the title, and a personal narrative about how the photograph was captured and created. A serialised holographic sticker links the certificate to the artwork, ensuring provenance and authenticity for resale or appraisal.

  • MATERIALS & PRINTING

    Acrylic

    Face-Mount Process

Each limited edition print is produced using a gallery‑grade acrylic face‑mounting process. The image is printed on high‑resolution metallic photo paper with archival inks, then permanently bonded to UV‑resistant acrylic using an optically clear adhesive. This technique allows light to pass through the acrylic and reflect off the metallic print, creating depth, vibrant color, and a dramatic presence. Cast acrylic is used to prevent yellowing over time, and the edges are polished for a refined finish.

  • MOUNTING & DISPLAY

    Ready to

    Present

Each piece arrives ready to hang using a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back of the artwork. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket, causing the print to float roughly one inch off the wall for a clean, modern presentation. Due to the weight and value of these pieces, professional installation is strongly recommended.
