Superstition Mountains, Arizona

This photograph was made in the Superstition Mountains at night, looking toward the Three Sisters formation. The desert had fully settled by then. Wind dropped, temperatures fell, and the landscape shifted into something slower and quieter.

Unlike the dramatic Milky Way core that rises in the southern and southeastern sky, this view faces roughly west. From this direction, the core never appears above the formation. Instead, the sky fills with the broader structure of the galaxy, the dense star fields and faint dust lanes trailing away from the brighter center.

Context and Landscape

The Superstition Mountains sit within the Sonoran Desert, where steep volcanic spires rise from slopes scattered with saguaros, cholla, and barrel cactus. At night, these forms become silhouettes, their texture replaced by shape and mass.

The Three Sisters formation is defined by three vertical rock towers, uneven and sharp against the sky. During the day, they dominate the landscape. At night, they become reference points, grounding the frame while the stars take over.

The Sonoran Desert holds darkness well. Away from city light, the sky becomes layered and deep, even in directions where the Milky Way is less concentrated.

Creation Notes

The foreground desert and rock formation were photographed on location at night from a fixed tripod position. The sky was photographed weeks earlier under clearer conditions and later aligned carefully to match orientation and perspective. Because this scene faces northwest, the bright Milky Way core does not appear. Instead, the image includes the trailing structure of the galaxy, aligned as closely as possible.

All prints are made to order and typically require 7-14 business days of production. Once complete, your artwork is carefully packaged and shipped with full insurance and tracking. We ship worldwide; domestic orders within the contiguous United States usually arrive within 1–5 business days. International deliveries are subject to local duties and taxes, which are the responsibility of the buyer. Large pieces may ship via freight and require additional handling time.

Mounting and Displaying your Art

Each piece arrives ready to hang with a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket to float the artwork approximately one inch off the wall, giving a refined gallery presentation. For small prints where a cleat is impractical, alternate hardware (screw or wire hanger) may be used on request. Because wall materials vary, we do not supply wall anchors and strongly recommend professional installation, especially for large or high‑value pieces.     Every photograph released as a limited edition is capped at twenty‑five total prints across all sizes and finishes. Once all twenty‑five are placed, the edition closes permanently and is never produced again. Your piece will be accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity documenting the edition number (for example, 3/25), the title, and a personal narrative about how the photograph was captured and created. A serialised holographic sticker links the certificate to the artwork, ensuring provenance and authenticity for resale or appraisal.

    Face-Mount Process

    Each limited edition print is produced using a gallery‑grade acrylic face‑mounting process. The image is printed on high‑resolution metallic photo paper with archival inks, then permanently bonded to UV‑resistant acrylic using an optically clear adhesive. This technique allows light to pass through the acrylic and reflect off the metallic print, creating depth, vibrant color, and a dramatic presence. Cast acrylic is used to prevent yellowing over time, and the edges are polished for a refined finish.
