About this Image

Cosmic Ashtray, Utah, United States

This photograph was created at the Cosmic Ashtray in southern Utah after a full night spent photographing the Milky Way from the lowest point of the formation. The location is one of my favorite places in the world, not only to photograph, but simply to exist within. Its scale and structure feel completely out of place in the surrounding desert, rising abruptly from the landscape in a way that feels both massive and isolated.

After many, many hours of night imaging and time-lapse work, the focus shifted as dawn approached. As the continued to run on one camera, another was setup, and The tripod was positioned roughly an hour before sunrise near the edge of the basin, allowing time to refine the composition while the terrain remained in shadow. As the sun cleared the horizon, light began to pour into the sandstone bowl, revealing depth, texture, and form that had been invisible throughout the night.

Foreground vegetation anchors the frame while the basin below holds shadow, creating a natural separation between illuminated sandstone and the darker interior. The image reflects the transition between night and day, capturing the moment when the environment slowly reveals itself.

Context and Landscape

The Cosmic Ashtray is defined by a massive circular sandstone basin filled with fine orange sand, the result of long-term erosion and wind deposition. The surrounding slickrock slopes inward toward the center, funneling sediment down into the bowl where it collects and slowly shifts with weather and time. From above, the interior feels sunken and self-contained, visually separated from the surrounding desert.

The contrast between hard sandstone walls and the soft sand below is what gives the formation its character. Footsteps disappear quickly, edges soften overnight, and the surface can change dramatically depending on wind and moisture. At first light, the sand reflects warmth back into the basin, while the upper rim remains cooler and exposed.

Vegetation survives only where sand accumulates deep enough to hold moisture. Sparse grasses and low desert plants take root along the margins, often growing at steep angles as the sand slowly migrates beneath them. These small pockets of life provide scale, emphasizing the depth of the bowl and the isolation of the terrain.

The Cosmic Ashtray feels out of place because it is. Its size, shape, and interior texture stand in sharp contrast to the flatter slickrock and open desert that surround it, making time spent there feel enclosed rather than expansive.

Creation Notes

Additional Details About The Print

Acrylic Brilliance

Acrylic brings depth, clarity, and presence that traditional prints simply cannot. Light moves through the image, giving the photograph a dimensional quality that feels immersive rather than flat. The result is a piece that holds attention across a room and feels as bold as the landscape it came from.

Mounting and Displaying your Art

Each piece arrives ready to hang with a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket to float the artwork approximately one inch off the wall, giving a refined gallery presentation. For small prints where a cleat is impractical, alternate hardware (screw or wire hanger) may be used on request. Because wall materials vary, we do not supply wall anchors and strongly recommend professional installation, especially for large or high‑value pieces. Image as example only, exact hardware can vary slightly

  • LIFETIME RUNS

    Limited Editions

    of 25 Prints

Every photograph released as a limited edition is capped at twenty‑five total prints across all sizes and finishes. Once all twenty‑five are placed, the edition closes permanently and is never produced again. Your piece will be accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity documenting the edition number (for example, 3/25), the title, and a personal narrative about how the photograph was captured and created. A serialised holographic sticker links the certificate to the artwork, ensuring provenance and authenticity for resale or appraisal.

  • MATERIALS & PRINTING

    Acrylic

    Face-Mount Process

Each limited edition print is produced using a gallery‑grade acrylic face‑mounting process. The image is printed on high‑resolution metallic photo paper with archival inks, then permanently bonded to UV‑resistant acrylic using an optically clear adhesive. This technique allows light to pass through the acrylic and reflect off the metallic print, creating depth, vibrant color, and a dramatic presence. Cast acrylic is used to prevent yellowing over time, and the edges are polished for a refined finish.

  • MOUNTING & DISPLAY

    Ready to

    Present

Each piece arrives ready to hang using a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back of the artwork. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket, causing the print to float roughly one inch off the wall for a clean, modern presentation. Due to the weight and value of these pieces, professional installation is strongly recommended.
