About this Image

Bisti–De-Na-Zin Badlands, New Mexico

This photograph came from a stretch of the Bisti–De-Na-Zin Badlands that I’ve walked many times before, but on this trip I wasn’t interested in chasing any of the well-known landmarks. This place is a dreamscape from every angle. Even without making a photograph, simply moving through it feels rewarding.

I came across this small stack of eroded stone tucked into the landscape, similar in character to the rounded, cracked egg formations found elsewhere in the badlands. The way these rocks formed traces back to ancient seas, with soft mud and minerals shaping the interior while harder sediment created an outer shell that slowly broke apart as the land dried and weathered.

What stopped me in my tracks was the light. For a brief moment, it brushed across the stones with a softness I didn’t expect. I rushed to set up, already feeling the pressure of how quickly it was changing. By the time I was ready to shoot, it was gone. Less than a minute. The frustration was real.

Instead of walking away, I chose to stay. I shot the location that night and was rewarded with the most amazing airglow I've ever seen.

I extended the trip by a full day and returned early the next evening, setting my tripod in place well ahead of time. When the light finally reached the rocks again, it lasted less than thirty seconds. Long enough to work quickly, carefully, and with intention. That fleeting window is what you see here.

Context and Landscape

The Bisti–De-Na-Zin Badlands sit in northwestern New Mexico, shaped by erosion, ancient seabeds, and millions of years of exposure. The landscape is constantly changing, fragile and temporary, with formations that feel both alien and deeply rooted in natural process.

Unlike more structured parks, the badlands offer no trails and no clear destinations. You wander. You notice. You respond to what the land presents in that moment. Light plays an outsized role here, revealing texture and depth briefly before slipping away again.

This is a place that rewards patience, awareness, and a willingness to return.

Creation Notes

This image was created using a rapid focus stack to maintain clarity across the foreground stones and surrounding terrain. Because the light window was extremely short, the stack had to be captured quickly and decisively.

Additional Details About The Print

Acrylic Brilliance

Acrylic brings depth, clarity, and presence that traditional prints simply cannot. Light moves through the image, giving the photograph a dimensional quality that feels immersive rather than flat. The result is a piece that holds attention across a room and feels as bold as the landscape it came from.

Limited Edition 25

Limited Edition works are produced in an edition of 25 total prints, regardless of size. Once all 25 are sold, the edition is permanently closed and never reproduced as a single print again. Every piece is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and a personal narrative that captures the story behind the image, from the journey to the moment it was created.

Mounting and Displaying your Art

Each piece arrives ready to hang with a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket to float the artwork approximately one inch off the wall, giving a refined gallery presentation. For small prints where a cleat is impractical, alternate hardware (screw or wire hanger) may be used on request. Because wall materials vary, we do not supply wall anchors and strongly recommend professional installation, especially for large or high‑value pieces. Image as example only, exact hardware can vary slightly

  • LIFETIME RUNS

    Limited Editions

    of 25 Prints

Every photograph released as a limited edition is capped at twenty‑five total prints across all sizes and finishes. Once all twenty‑five are placed, the edition closes permanently and is never produced again. Your piece will be accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity documenting the edition number (for example, 3/25), the title, and a personal narrative about how the photograph was captured and created. A serialised holographic sticker links the certificate to the artwork, ensuring provenance and authenticity for resale or appraisal.

  • MATERIALS & PRINTING

    Acrylic

    Face-Mount Process

Each limited edition print is produced using a gallery‑grade acrylic face‑mounting process. The image is printed on high‑resolution metallic photo paper with archival inks, then permanently bonded to UV‑resistant acrylic using an optically clear adhesive. This technique allows light to pass through the acrylic and reflect off the metallic print, creating depth, vibrant color, and a dramatic presence. Cast acrylic is used to prevent yellowing over time, and the edges are polished for a refined finish.

  • MOUNTING & DISPLAY

    Ready to

    Present

Each piece arrives ready to hang using a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back of the artwork. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket, causing the print to float roughly one inch off the wall for a clean, modern presentation. Due to the weight and value of these pieces, professional installation is strongly recommended.
