It is one of the most recognizable locations in Big Bend National Park, and one I have visited many times over the years. Because it has been photographed so extensively, it is not a place I actively seek out for personal work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"926\" data-end=\"1319\"\u003eWhile teaching a student how to focus stack near the river’s edge, I was positioned very low to the ground, close to a small cluster of stones along the Rio Grande. Water levels were unusually low, exposing details along the canyon floor that are often submerged. While demonstrating focus placement and framing, I made a few quick exposures without any intention of creating a finished image.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1321\" data-end=\"1483\"\u003eOne of those frames stood out. The stones, shallow water, and canyon walls aligned naturally, forming a simple and balanced composition without additional effort.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 data-start=\"1485\" data-end=\"1509\"\u003eContext and Landscape\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1511\" data-end=\"1785\"\u003eSanta Elena Canyon marks the western boundary between the United States and Mexico, with the Rio Grande flowing directly through the canyon floor. The limestone walls rise nearly vertical on both sides, creating a narrow corridor that amplifies light, reflection, and scale.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1787\" data-end=\"2004\"\u003eDuring periods of low water, the river slows and clears, allowing reflections and foreground details to become part of the scene.
