About this Image

Coal Mine Canyon, Arizona

Standing at the rim of this canyon at night feels like standing at the end of certainty. The ground beneath your feet is solid, but only just. Beyond it, the land falls away into layered silence, and the sky opens up in the opposite direction, vast and unmeasured.

The twisted shrub in the foreground caught my attention immediately. Weathered, bleached, and anchored to the edge, it felt like the last thing holding on before everything drops into space. I built the composition around that tension, the fragile boundary between staying and falling, between the known and the unknowable.

Above it all, the Milky Way stretched across the sky, luminous and dense, reminding me how small this moment was in the larger arc of time. This image came together slowly and quietly, shaped by patience and respect for a place that doesn’t offer itself easily.

Context and Landscape

Coal Mine Canyon lies near Tuba City in northern Arizona, carved deep into the high desert of the Colorado Plateau. The canyon exposes a vivid cross-section of sedimentary layers, with mineral-rich bands painting the walls in reds, yellows, grays, and blues. These colors come from iron, manganese, and other elements deposited over millions of years, then revealed through erosion.

The canyon is vast and largely undeveloped. There are no guardrails, no signs, no defined viewpoints. The rim arrives suddenly, and the drop is immediate. The land here belongs to the Navajo Nation, and the landscape carries both geological depth and cultural significance, shaped by time, weather, and human presence long before photography ever found it.

At night, the remoteness becomes its defining feature. With virtually no light pollution, the stars dominate the sky. The Milky Way appears with clarity and structure, arching over the canyon and reinforcing the sense that this place exists at the meeting point of deep earth and deep space.

Creation Notes

The foreground was captured using a focus stack to maintain clarity in the shrub and the canyon rim.

Additional Details About The Print

Acrylic Brilliance

Acrylic brings depth, clarity, and presence that traditional prints simply cannot. Light moves through the image, giving the photograph a dimensional quality that feels immersive rather than flat. The result is a piece that holds attention across a room and feels as bold as the landscape it came from.

Limited Edition 25

Limited Edition works are produced in an edition of 25 total prints, regardless of size. Once all 25 are sold, the edition is permanently closed and never reproduced as a single print again. Every piece is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and a personal narrative that captures the story behind the image, from the journey to the moment it was created.

All prints are made to order and typically require 7-14 business days of production. Once complete, your artwork is carefully packaged and shipped with full insurance and tracking. We ship worldwide; domestic orders within the contiguous United States usually arrive within 1–5 business days. International deliveries are subject to local duties and taxes, which are the responsibility of the buyer. Large pieces may ship via freight and require additional handling time.

Mounting and Displaying your Art

Each piece arrives ready to hang with a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket to float the artwork approximately one inch off the wall, giving a refined gallery presentation. For small prints where a cleat is impractical, alternate hardware (screw or wire hanger) may be used on request. Because wall materials vary, we do not supply wall anchors and strongly recommend professional installation, especially for large or high‑value pieces. Image as example only, exact hardware can vary slightly

  • LIFETIME RUNS

    Limited Editions

    of 25 Prints

Every photograph released as a limited edition is capped at twenty‑five total prints across all sizes and finishes. Once all twenty‑five are placed, the edition closes permanently and is never produced again. Your piece will be accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity documenting the edition number (for example, 3/25), the title, and a personal narrative about how the photograph was captured and created. A serialised holographic sticker links the certificate to the artwork, ensuring provenance and authenticity for resale or appraisal.

  • MATERIALS & PRINTING

    Acrylic

    Face-Mount Process

Each limited edition print is produced using a gallery‑grade acrylic face‑mounting process. The image is printed on high‑resolution metallic photo paper with archival inks, then permanently bonded to UV‑resistant acrylic using an optically clear adhesive. This technique allows light to pass through the acrylic and reflect off the metallic print, creating depth, vibrant color, and a dramatic presence. Cast acrylic is used to prevent yellowing over time, and the edges are polished for a refined finish.

  • MOUNTING & DISPLAY

    Ready to

    Present

Each piece arrives ready to hang using a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back of the artwork. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket, causing the print to float roughly one inch off the wall for a clean, modern presentation. Due to the weight and value of these pieces, professional installation is strongly recommended.
