About this Image

Sedona, Arizona

This photograph was made in Sedona, looking toward Cathedral Rock, one of the most photographed landmarks in the Southwest. It was my first and only trip to Sedona as of the time of this writing, and while I tend to avoid places this well documented, Sedona earns its reputation. It forces you to think differently. The terrain, the light, and the sheer density of recognizable formations demand intention.

Rather than step back and frame the obvious, I moved forward.

I placed a 10mm lens directly into the center of a prickly pear cactus, working inches from the pads and needles. My tripod was covered in spines by the time I finished. The goal was to build tension between the aggressive foreground and the iconic formation behind it, letting texture and proximity do the work instead of distance and scale alone.

This approach sacrifices conventional softness and easy depth of field, but it aligns with how I see. Close, physical, and a little uncomfortable. Cathedral Rock becomes something you have to look past and through, not just at.

Context and Landscape

Sedona sits at the meeting point of desert and uplifted red rock, where erosion has carved spires, buttes, and fins out of sandstone layers laid down millions of years ago. Cathedral Rock rises above the surrounding vegetation as one of the most recognizable formations in the area, catching strong color at sunrise and sunset.

Prickly pear cactus grow throughout the region, thriving in shallow soil and harsh exposure. Their broad pads and long spines create natural barriers, shaping how you move through the land. They are both obstacle and anchor, often overlooked in favor of the formations behind them.

Here, both exist in the same frame, competing for attention.

Creation Notes

This image was captured at sunset using a combination of focus stacking and focal length blending.

The foreground cactus was photographed with an ultra-wide 10mm lens to emphasize proximity and scale at close range. Due to the extreme depth and dense spines, multiple focus points were captured and stacked to maintain clarity across the pads and needles.

Cathedral Rock on the horizon was photographed at the same moment using a longer focal length. Ultra-wide lenses dramatically reduce the apparent size of distant features, which does not reflect how the scene is actually perceived. Blending the two focal lengths allowed the formation to retain its presence and scale as it appeared in the field. The blending was done to correct optical limitations and preserve the balance between foreground intensity and background scale.

Additional Details About The Print

Acrylic Brilliance

Acrylic brings depth, clarity, and presence that traditional prints simply cannot. Light moves through the image, giving the photograph a dimensional quality that feels immersive rather than flat. The result is a piece that holds attention across a room and feels as bold as the landscape it came from.

Limited Edition 25

Limited Edition works are produced in an edition of 25 total prints, regardless of size. Once all 25 are sold, the edition is permanently closed and never reproduced as a single print again. Every piece is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and a personal narrative that captures the story behind the image, from the journey to the moment it was created.

Mounting and Displaying your Art

Each piece arrives ready to hang with a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket to float the artwork approximately one inch off the wall, giving a refined gallery presentation. For small prints where a cleat is impractical, alternate hardware (screw or wire hanger) may be used on request. Because wall materials vary, we do not supply wall anchors and strongly recommend professional installation, especially for large or high‑value pieces. Image as example only, exact hardware can vary slightly

  • LIFETIME RUNS

    Limited Editions

    of 25 Prints

Every photograph released as a limited edition is capped at twenty‑five total prints across all sizes and finishes. Once all twenty‑five are placed, the edition closes permanently and is never produced again. Your piece will be accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity documenting the edition number (for example, 3/25), the title, and a personal narrative about how the photograph was captured and created. A serialised holographic sticker links the certificate to the artwork, ensuring provenance and authenticity for resale or appraisal.

  • MATERIALS & PRINTING

    Acrylic

    Face-Mount Process

Each limited edition print is produced using a gallery‑grade acrylic face‑mounting process. The image is printed on high‑resolution metallic photo paper with archival inks, then permanently bonded to UV‑resistant acrylic using an optically clear adhesive. This technique allows light to pass through the acrylic and reflect off the metallic print, creating depth, vibrant color, and a dramatic presence. Cast acrylic is used to prevent yellowing over time, and the edges are polished for a refined finish.

  • MOUNTING & DISPLAY

    Ready to

    Present

Each piece arrives ready to hang using a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back of the artwork. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket, causing the print to float roughly one inch off the wall for a clean, modern presentation. Due to the weight and value of these pieces, professional installation is strongly recommended.
