About this Image

Bisti Badlands, New Mexico

This photograph was made during the same early expedition that produced my original Alien Throne masterwork. The scene was illuminated by a full moon, which is why the landscape appears unusually bright and the shadows are deep and dramatic.

At the time, I was still very early in my photography journey. I didn’t know if I would ever see this formation again. The Bisti Badlands felt distant and difficult to access, and this trip carried a sense of urgency. I wanted to leave with something meaningful and make the most out of what may be my only photography trip of my life.

Later, under a new moon, I photographed the Milky Way and composited it into the scene in its correct position. By today’s standards, I work much harder to capture sky and foreground on the same night whenever compositing is involved, or preferably in a single exposure. But at that point in my journey, I was working with the understanding and access I had at the time.

This image represents that mindset. Doing everything possible to bring home what the place felt like, even if the process was still evolving.

Context and Landscape

The Bisti Badlands are a maze of eroded stone, fragile hoodoos, and open desert that feels otherworldly even in daylight. At night, under moonlight, the formations take on sharp contrast and long shadows that exaggerate their shapes and scale.

The Alien Throne is one of the most striking formations in the area, rising abruptly from the surrounding terrain. Over the years, it has become one of my favorite places to return to whenever I’m traveling west. What once felt like a once-in-a-lifetime stop has become familiar ground.

That shift didn’t exist when this image was made. This photograph comes from a time when everything here still felt uncertain, both the place and my future within it.

Creation Notes

The foreground was photographed under a full moon, using the natural light to reveal texture and form without artificial illumination. The Milky Way was captured separately under a new moon and later composited into its proper alignment in the sky.

Both elements were photographed intentionally to maintain scale, orientation, and realism. The Milky Way was processed conservatively, avoiding exaggerated contrast or color, with the goal of preserving a natural appearance.

While my approach to night photography has continued to evolve toward more authenticity, this image remains one of my favorite night photographs from one of my favorite places, and an honest reflection of where I was creatively at the time.

Additional Details About The Print

Acrylic Brilliance

Acrylic brings depth, clarity, and presence that traditional prints simply cannot. Light moves through the image, giving the photograph a dimensional quality that feels immersive rather than flat. The result is a piece that holds attention across a room and feels as bold as the landscape it came from.

Limited Edition 25

Limited Edition works are produced in an edition of 25 total prints, regardless of size. Once all 25 are sold, the edition is permanently closed and never reproduced as a single print again. Every piece is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and a personal narrative that captures the story behind the image, from the journey to the moment it was created.

Mounting and Displaying your Art

Each piece arrives ready to hang with a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket to float the artwork approximately one inch off the wall, giving a refined gallery presentation. For small prints where a cleat is impractical, alternate hardware (screw or wire hanger) may be used on request. Because wall materials vary, we do not supply wall anchors and strongly recommend professional installation, especially for large or high‑value pieces. Image as example only, exact hardware can vary slightly

  • LIFETIME RUNS

    Limited Editions

    of 25 Prints

Every photograph released as a limited edition is capped at twenty‑five total prints across all sizes and finishes. Once all twenty‑five are placed, the edition closes permanently and is never produced again. Your piece will be accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity documenting the edition number (for example, 3/25), the title, and a personal narrative about how the photograph was captured and created. A serialised holographic sticker links the certificate to the artwork, ensuring provenance and authenticity for resale or appraisal.

  • MATERIALS & PRINTING

    Acrylic

    Face-Mount Process

Each limited edition print is produced using a gallery‑grade acrylic face‑mounting process. The image is printed on high‑resolution metallic photo paper with archival inks, then permanently bonded to UV‑resistant acrylic using an optically clear adhesive. This technique allows light to pass through the acrylic and reflect off the metallic print, creating depth, vibrant color, and a dramatic presence. Cast acrylic is used to prevent yellowing over time, and the edges are polished for a refined finish.

  • MOUNTING & DISPLAY

    Ready to

    Present

Each piece arrives ready to hang using a professional aluminum cleat system affixed to the back of the artwork. The cleat interlocks with a matching wall bracket, causing the print to float roughly one inch off the wall for a clean, modern presentation. Due to the weight and value of these pieces, professional installation is strongly recommended.
