Heavenly Hanksville

Landscape and Astrophotography Workshop.
A collaboration with Blazing Heavens Astrophotography

WHERE THE DESERT STOPS FEELING LIKE EARTH

A photography adventure through one of the most surreal landscapes on the planet

Hanksville sits in a remote stretch of Utah’s high desert where bentonite hills ripple with color, badlands stretch endlessly, and massive rock formations rise out of terrain that feels more alien than familiar. The landscape is quiet, vast, and visually overwhelming even before the sun goes down. When night falls, the sky goes completely dark and the Milky Way fills the horizon, transforming an already otherworldly place into one of the most powerful environments on Earth for experiencing and photographing the night sky.

More than a workshop

Immersive photography experiences led by seasoned guides

This workshop is for photographers who want to explore deeper. We work in remote environments, rely on experience rather than convenience, and prioritize access to places that feel wild and unforgettable. With knowledgeable guides handling the details, you’re free to stay present, creative, and engaged. Every day is shaped by light, landscape, and opportunity, creating an experience that is as rewarding as the images you take home. Designed to be a lifetime experience even for non-photographers!

  • GETTING THERE AND BACK

    LOGISTICS

    & FLOW

Hanksville, Utah serves as our home base for the workshop. We begin in town on the afternoon of April 15 and wrap up the morning of April 19, allowing four nights of shooting timed around the New Moon and Milky Way core.

The easiest airports are Salt Lake City, Grand Junction, and Moab, each offering a scenic drive into the desert. Once everyone arrives, we coordinate carpools and caravans to shooting locations. Distances are short, access is straightforward, and the pace stays relaxed so the focus remains on the experience.

  • LODGING OPTIONS

    Camp

    or stay local

This workshop offers a camping-first experience designed to put you as close as possible to the landscapes we are photographing. Camping allows front-row access to sunsets, night skies, and sunrise without long drives in the dark.

Hotels are also available in Hanksville for those who prefer a bed and a shower each night. Campers have access to bathrooms and showers nearby, and we can provide camping gear, power, Starlink, water, and basic supplies as needed. You are welcome to mix camping and hotel stays throughout the trip.

  • DIFFICULTY & GROUP SIZE

    Accessible

    but Rewarding

This is an easygoing workshop with high payoff. Hiking is minimal, and most locations are reached by vehicle, but you should be comfortable moving over uneven terrain at night while carrying camera gear.

Group size is intentionally small with six participants and two instructors. This allows for individual attention, hands-on help in the field, and plenty of time for questions, adjustments, and personal guidance under the stars.

  • WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

    From Planning

    to Final Image

We teach our complete workflow, starting with how to plan a shot before ever arriving on location. You will learn how we approach composition, timing, and night sky fundamentals, along with practical camera settings for changing conditions.

Instruction continues through focused editing sessions during the trip, with additional follow-up tutorials provided afterward. Topics range from night focusing and Milky Way shooting to panoramas, trackers, blue hour blending, and building images that feel intentional and complete.

  • LOCATION HIGHLIGHTS

    Iconic

    and Otherworldly

Hanksville sits at the center of some of the most surreal terrain in the Southwest. Clay hills ripple with color, badlands stretch endlessly, and rock formations rise out of landscapes that feel almost unreal.

Locations include Goblin Valley, the Bentonite Hills, Factory Butte, Moonscape Overlook, Badland Spires, and Leprechaun Canyon. Each site is chosen for access, safety, and its potential to pair powerful foregrounds with the night sky.
